The USC men’s ultimate frisbee team recently played in the Irvine Huckfest over Halloween weekend.
This was the first tournament that the Ghettobirds brought rookies to and they didn’t disappoint. In fact, this was the first tournament in memory in which the Ghettobirds brought 2 teams because of the high numbers that have expressed interest in playing for USC! This was great news, and while it meant less subs for each team, it also meant more playing time, which is all you can ask for in the fall.
USC-X and USC-Y (very creative team names, we know) both played well Saturday, although we must’ve been hexed by the forthcoming shellacking of our football team later that night because neither team was able to pull out a victory. Regardless, the rookies got a lot of valuable tournament experience and it was awesome to finally play as a team and come together rather than just the usual scrimmages in practice.
Sunday was a different story. USC-Y almost took the first game of the day, narrowly losing to Long Beach-X 12-10. But they rallied to win the last two games pretty convincingly over Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State B. On the other hand, The USC-X team got off to a blistering start by beating Arizona State B. Unfortunately, they were unable to bring home their two remaining games. Yet, both teams learned a lot and it was great to have so many new players out there. They really improved throughout the entire weekend and it’s the fall, so results don’t even matter. We can’t wait to see what our team will be like come spring.
